Reacting to the readers’ complaints after Khaleej Times published a report regarding shortage of blood in Dubai hospitals, Dr Laila Al Shaer, head of the DBDC, said change in the operating timings of the centre was under consideration.
“We plan to keep the centre open during weekends so that the working population can also donate blood in their free time,” she said. The centre currently operates six days a week with a day off on Saturday during which maintenance and cleaning work are carried out. “Instead of closing on Saturdays, we will choose a weekday,” she said.
A number of readers and potential donors had complained that the centre was closed over the weekends, a time when they were free from work.
An increasing number of accident cases during Ramadan and an annual seasonal lull have led to severe blood shortage in Dubai hospitals with the Trauma Centre at Rashid Hospital and the Thalassemia Centre at Al Wasl Hospital being hit the hardest.
Dr Laila also said the centre could not accommodate more than 200 people at one time — hence the focus was on scheduled campaigns.
The DBDC provides blood and its derivatives to 27 government and private centres all over the UAE, fulfilling 50 per cent of the country’s blood needs. Five other centres in all other emirates cover the remaining shortage.
Meanwhile, an ongoing campaign by the Ministry of Health collected 55 blood units on the first day. The mobile campaign is being held at Dubai mosques.
