The winners of the National Day Calligraphy Competition were named on Monday. Deyaa Allam walked home with Dh100,000 for his impressive interpretation of the poem 'Aldar Amra Be'ahalha' (the beauty of our home comes from its people).
Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, congratulated the winners of the competition held by Aldar Properties PJSC (Aldar) at Yas Mall.
Jalal Al Mohareb came second to take the Dh50,000 prize and Fatima Al Hammadi got Dh25,000 for third place.
Aldar chief executive officer Mohammed Khalifa Al Mubarak said: "We are humbled to see the passion for our country expressed through the art form of calligraphy. We thank Shaikh Nahyan for his continuous support in developing and shaping the arts and culture scene of the country."
The competition saw as many as 290 entries from teenagers to retirees, thus reflecting calligraphy's role in the UAE's artistic and cultural landscape.
The judging panel, led by Emirati calligrapher Mohammed Mandi, selected 10 short-listed artists to re-create their calligraphic art pieces at Yas Mall over a 10-day period.
The works were chosen based on artistic hand lettering, creative interpretation of the poem, and effective use of colour and design.
The video of 'Aldar Amra Be'ahalha' was produced by Aldar and written, composed and sung by Emirati artists.
