Can physiotherapy halt arthritis in early stages?

DUBAI - Over 100 doctors attended an ongoing medical education programme on physiotherapy and rehabilitation case management organised recently by Belhoul Speciality Hospital. Rashid Buhari, Chief Physiotherapist and Head of the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department at the hospital, spoke about the advanced management of certain rheumatic diseases that cause arthritis.

Arthritis is a general term for more than 100 diseases. It refers to inflammation of joints, one of the body's natural reactions to disease or injury, accompanied by pain and stiffness. Chronic inflammation can lead to tissue damage. The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease. It is most prevalent in women over 55. Mr Buhari focused on the physiotherapeutic approach to the advanced management of Ankylosing Spondylitis, through discussing an actual case study.

Ankylosing Spondylitis is a rheumatic disease that causes arthritis of the spine and sacro iliac joints and can cause inflammation of the eyes, lungs and heart valves.

Men aged between 15 and 35 are typically affected by the disease. Symptoms include lower back pain, pain and stiffness in any part of the spine and joints.
