Cargo ship hijacked by Somali pirates

DUBAI — Somali pirates on October 19 hijacked a cargo vessel off the coast of Mogadishu, the capital of the war-torn country. The Comoran-flagged vessel, ‘Al Marjan’, had sailed from Dubai’s Hamriya port, carrying general cargo, maritime officials said.

Andrew Mwangura, director of the Kenyan Branch of Seafarers’ Association, told Khaleej Times yesterday from Mombasa that efforts were being made to establish contact with pirates as well as the ship owners.

The vessel, owned by Shahmir Maritime of Saint Vincent and Grenadines, was being operated by the Dubai-based Biyat International.

“We don’t have the number and nationalities of the crew members yet. We have been trying to trace the location of the vessel, but we still have no idea where the vessel and the crew are,” Mwangura said. The pirates, Mwangura said, have so far not made a ransom demand.
