Cash crunch hits Pak school’s plan to add new block

“As soon as the go-ahead is given by the Dubai Municipality — which is expected this week — work will start on the block. Meanwhile the afternoon shift has been ended,” said Pakistani Consul General in Dubai, Amanullah Larik while speaking to Khaleej Times yesterday.

“Both shifts have been merged and some students have been shifted to the Pakistani school in Sharjah while others have been adjusted in the same school,” he added.

The construction work on the His Highness Shaikh Rashid Al Maktoum School block and the administration block of the Pakistan Islamia Higher Secondary School in Sharjah has been pending for a long time due to lack of funds. Though the deadline given by the Dubai Educational Zone to end the afternoon shift was April 2004, the consulate had requested for an extension till September 1, which has now been delayed further.

A total of Dh800,000 is needed for the construction of the new block. The Pakistan Consulate General in Dubai has donated Dh300,000 while the remaining amount is expected to be raised by the Pakistan community in the UAE.

Mr Larik said that the consulate might agree to donate another Dh100,000 bringing the total amount donated by the consulate to Dh400,000. He said that a major portion of the funds had already been transferred to the Development Fund Account.

“Even after a long wait, we received no positive response from the community. We, therefore, had no choice but to ask for money from the Pakistan government,” he said, adding that all paper work was complete and the architectural plans ready.

Mr Larik also said that, as yet, the Pakistan government had not made any decision regarding donation of the required Dh100,000. “Now we are hoping that after the construction is complete, the government will donate the required amount,” he added.
