This came to light yesterday during a meeting of the officials of the Public Education Department and the heads of its affiliated sections. The meeting had been called by the Ministry of Education (MoE).

Interestingly, these students have been studying English for the last 12 years during which they have passed all their English tests.

The meeting, also attended by the director of the Public Education Department, had been called to familiarise the Adult Education Centre students with some of the procedures of filling up forms in government schools.

Among the officials present were the directors of the evening classes of Adults Education Centres.

When the MoE officials asked the directors of the evening classes of Adult Education Centres to direct their students to write their names on cards in English, the latter complained that 90 per cent of these students could not write their names in English!
