Congress candidate booked for violation

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has finally ordered an FIR against sitting Congress MP and Rajkot Lok Sabha candidate Kunvarji Bavalia (59) for violating the model code of conduct, even as the police probe into the code violation case against Narendra Modi continued on Monday.

Bavalia, a former executive president of the Gujarat Congress and former legislator, was wearing a scarf prominently depicting his party’s election symbol — a palm — inside the polling station while casting his vote in his native place Vinchiya in Jasdan taluka of Rajkot district in presence of photographers on April 30.

BJP leader Jagdish Bhavsar told Khaleej Times that it was surprising that the ECI, which was quick to order an FIR against the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate when he flaunted his party’s symbol — a lotus — near a polling booth, swung into action in Bavalia’s case only after four days.
