Up to 10,000 awareness posters and leaflets have been printed in simple and easy languages for school students alone, while over 100 pamphlets have been set aside for airline passengers, said the official, adding that the ministry was intensifying the H1N1 awareness campaign.

The official, who did not want to be named, said that it was not important to disclose the ministry’s budget for spending on the awareness campaign.

Already 600,000 awareness leaflets have been distributed, he said.

Dr Ali Ahmed bin Shukr, director-general in the Ministry of Health and head of the National Committee to Combat H1N1, said there was still a need to educate people on how to avoid contracting the disease. “At least 100,000 copies have been printed to provide tips to parents and students on the virus,” he said. Another 10,000 copies have been printed for educationists detailing the general plan to deal with the flu in educational institutions, 10,000 small booklets have been printed for pilgrims and 100,000 booklets listing common questions and answers on the disease.

The ministry has printed 120 info banners that have been placed in commercial and shopping centres while 1,000 CDs of a 30-second television commercial have been distributed among companies.

Cleaners have also been targeted in this campaign.

“Posters highlighting the importance of hand washing techniques and rinsing have been put up in government washrooms for users as well as cleaners,” said the official.

He also said that the ministry would now focus on distribution ofmasks in schools.

“We noticed that several children had skipped school last week because they were scared of the virus,” said the official, adding that the ministry would start distribution of masks and sanitizers in schools soon.
