Dad shattered by daughter’s death

DUBAI — An expat father cried helplessly when he heard the news of his daughter’s death in the earthquake. 'Trapped' was the word he used to describe her death, his feelings and his family’s condition after the massive quake that claimed thousands of lives in Pakistan alone.

"I saw her two weeks ago. She was my youngest daughter amongst the five children," Ghulam Hussain said, speaking about the death of his 14-year-old child. "My village is in Panjoor, across the river and Neelam Valley and no help has reached there till now. I learnt about her death through a friend who travelled from the destroyed area to a place where I got in touch with him," explains Hussain. "Nearly 2,300 people in that part alone lost their lives," he said.

Though the rest of his family — wife and the remaining four children — survived the earthquake, they have not eaten for days. "No aid has reached the place yet and I am sure none will because it is a remote area and reaching there is impossible now because of the landslides," he said.

Hussain is afraid that his surviving family might not live through the present conditions. "They are living under the open sky, and winter has already set in that area. They might not survive that," he said.

Hussain plans to fly back home once the roads are cleared and communication network is restored.

Hussain laments the fact that being an expat had cost him dearly. "All my life, I toiled day and night so that my family back home could enjoy a better life, but in a short span of time, nature’s fury struck and took away all that I had," he said, adding: "I may gather the will to make my home once again, but my daughter cannot come back, ever."
