A significant drop has been seen in the prices of Sheri and Safi fish after the end of a two-month ban on the popular types.
Fishermen caught about 500kg of Sheri and Safi fish on Tuesday after the March-April ban was lifted by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.
However, fishermen voiced their concerns about the negative impact of the ban on their job.
"Sheri and Safi fish have already migrated from coasts of Ras Al Khaimah to the northern parts of the nearby countries," said Mohammed Akram, a local fisherman.
Salah Saeed, another fisherman, said the amounts of Sheri and Safi fish collected is very little due to their migration in search for food. "The ministry should have a detailed discussion on the ban decree with the fishermen and people concerned to take the right decision."
Sheri fish was available at Dh20 per kilo at the RAK fish market on Wednesday. Ashraf Yaseen, a Jordanian customer, said: "It was priced at Dh30 per kilo before the start of the ban."
Ibrahim Jassim, a fish dealer, said the amounts of Sheri and Safi fish are expected to increase in the evening when fishermen take out their fishing nets.
