Delays expected in Eida card delivery

ABU DHABI - Delays can be expected in the delivery of Emirates ID cards to residents who have completed registration procedures in November and December. This is mainly due to the shifting of the ID card printing operations centre from the old location in Abu Dhabi to the ICAD area in Mussafah in the Capital.

Dr Ali Mohamed Al Khouri, Director General of Emirates Identity Authority said this on Wednesday after signing a service level agreement with the Emirates Post to upgrade the ID card delivery across the UAE.

The agreement was signed during a press conference held at the Emirates Identity Authority-affiliated Emirates Smart Card Factory in Abu Dhabi between Dr Al Khouri and Abdullah Al Ashram, CEO of Emirates Post.

Dr Al Khouri said the delay in delivery was also due to the rapid rise in ID card registration rates across the UAE, and the fact that the number of new and renewed ID cards to be printed daily exceeded 40,000 cards.

According to the agreement, Emirates Post will receive ID cards from the Eida on a daily basis and will subsequently send SMS messages in Arabic or English (as per customer’s nationality) to customers (within less than 48 hours) calling on them to pick up their cards from an Emirates Post centre or private mailboxes.

The agreement stipulates that Emirates Post should provide weekly and monthly reports on the delivered and returned cards and the reasons and date of the return.

Emirates Post should also provide proof that the Corporation has communicated with the customer more than once, telling him that he/she should pick up the card.

The agreement also stipulates that lost ID cards or cards sent to the wrong person should not exceed 0.1 per cent of the total cards annually delivered by the Emirates Identity Authority to the Emirates Post.

Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Executive Director of Population Register at the Eida, said: “Emirates Post delivered more than 1.8 million ID cards to their owners over 11 months out of more than 2.69 million cards that were delivered to the Post in February 2011.

Al Mazrouei pointed out that more than 250,000 ID cards have been ready for delivery at the post centres for months now but have not been picked up yet although their owners have been notified several times.

The rate of delivery of ID cards to their owners across the UAE stood at around 12,000 cards per day.
