Demand to set up NRI varsity in Kerala

DUBAI — Office-bearers of the All Kerala Pravasis and Gulf Returnees Co-Ordination Council have submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh, requesting him to establish the proposed NRI University in Kerala.

Council Chairman S. Ahmed presented the memorandum in the presence of Vice-Chairman Kadakkal Ramesh.

A majority of more than two million Indians working abroad are from Kerala.

These NRIs are forced to bear huge financial burden when their children are pursuing higher education in foreign universities. A solution to this problem is to establish a university of international standards in Kerala, so that NRIs can afford quality education for their children.

Copies of the memorandum were also submitted to Union Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh, Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi, Union Defence Minister A. K. Antony, Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahmed and Principal Secretary to Prime Minister T. K. A. Nair.
