The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has urged customers to limit electricity usage between 12pm and 6pm to protect the environment, saying environmental sustainability helps preserve natural resources for us all and for generations to come.

The Peak-Load campaign, initiated by the authority, encourages users to limit their use of devices that use a lot of power such as irons, washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, water heaters, and electric ovens during peak consumption hours (12pm-6pm), and reschedule their use to the morning and evening as much as possible. The campaign also urges commercial and industrial consumers to shift their less-critical energy operations from peak to off-peak hours. This will help save fuel used in power generation, and contribute to reducing emissions that pollute the environment.

Dewa works to establish a sustainable society that contributes to limiting the depletion of natural resources, in fulfillment of the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy which aims to reduce energy demand by 30 per cent by 2030. To reach a sustainable environment, we all have to follow a lifestyle that fulfills current demands while ensuring that future generations will be able to fulfill their demands as well.

“The Dewa organises and launches various awareness campaigns to promote rational consumption of natural resources to preserve them and support sustainable development for generations to come,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dewa.

According to him the Peak-Load campaign is rolled out to encourage responsible behaviour and shared responsibility among Dewa’s consumers in their homes, offices and factories, in terms of electricity and water consumption and thus reduce global warming.

Using electrical appliances and equipment during the peak-load hours, which are typically from 12pm to 6pm during the summer months, adds to the power load within the electricity network. The Dewa has to enhance its power generation capacity during peak-load hours. The campaign programmes aim to educate residential consumers on how to contribute to reducing the load on the power-generation system by using their high-power-consuming electrical devices outside peak hours.

Air-conditioning represents as much as 60 per cent of the peak load consumption.

“By reducing air-conditioning even marginally, it is possible for consumers not only to lower their electricity bills but also increase the overall reliability and efficiency of the electrical system. If every customer changed the air-conditioning in their homes or offices from 20 degree Celsius to either 23 or 24 degree Celsius during peak hours, this will considerably reduce energy consumption. By adopting such a small measure, we’ll be able to help in reducing carbon dioxide emissions and conserve natural resources,” Al Tayer said.

“It is significant that all community members participate in the peak-load campaign to sustain our natural resources,” said Amal Koshak, Senior Manager of Marketing Communications at Dewa.
