Sharjah — The new decree issued on Sunday by His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, regarding the fees for power, gas and water connections will not affect the service tariff, said a top official of the Sharjah Electiricity and Water authority (Sewa).

Expatriates also appreciated the decree and concerns of the Ruler in ensuring the best and affordable living for them in the emirate, as they will have to pay only Dh200 for a new power connection as stipulated by Decree No. 1/ A of 2015.

According to the power connection and extension fee schedules approved by the Ruler, the fee for giving a power connection to a UAE national’s house using a load up to 100 kilowatt is Dh100 and that for a house using more than 100 kilowatt is Dh160.

In case of requesting an urgent connection, a fee of Dh1,500 has to paid for each kilowatt. The connection fee for an expatriate living in a rented apartment is only Dh100, while the owner of an industrial or commercial establishment will have to pay Dh1,000 and the owner of a farm Dh250.

The fee for a high-voltage connection for a private resident will be the same as that of the low-voltage connection — Dh100 — but UAE nationals  will get 10 per cent discount on this.

For power meter installation, the decree determined new fees — Dh150 for a normal meter, 250 for a three-phase meter, and Dh600 for a CT (current transformer) meter.

The fee for a high-voltage connection in a federal or local government building must have to be paid in full, while the connection fee for government housing must be paid in full by the Public Works and Housing Department.

The fee for a temporary connection in an under-construction project is calculated at Dh100 per kilovolt and Dh15 will have to be paid for transportation of the transmitter cables. All materials will have to be provided by the contractor. The water connection fees do not include the material and meter prices and in all federal and government facilities, these fees must be paid in full while 10 per cent discount is provided for citizens only.

Rashid Alleem, Chairman of Sewa, said the decree was issued with the aim of providing best services with international standards to residents and citizens of the emirate. The decision also considered their financial burden.

He stressed that the decree will not affect the electricity tariff which, in Sharjah, is considered among the lowest in the UAE. In fact, the Sewa is making efforts bring the tariff under a unified structure to make it affordable to all residents.

Maintenance dept to work 24/7

He added that as per the instruction of the Sharjah Ruler, the Sewa has issued a decision to make the operation and network maintenance department to work 24 hours a day and seven days a week to provide the best services to the residents and citizens.

The authority has given training to technical cadres who work in the department to provide professional and quality work. They respond to emergency cases as quickly as possible, ensuring the safety and security.

The department used to work from 7.30am to 2.30pm, but effective from Monday, the section will be operational round the clock to respond to complaints about faults and technical issues.
