According to Abdullah Ahmed Al Najjar, Head of Projects Construction Section at Dubai Municipality, the project is aimed at enhancing waste disposal facilities in the city.

The project comprises four evaporation ponds with a total size of 2,349 square metres which will help reduce the liquid waste volume by solar-drying of free liquid contents of the waste water.

The ponds, he said, will have double-lined system to contain the hazardous waste materials. When the liquid waste in the pond converts into dried sludge due to evaporation, the sludge will be removed from the ponds for final disposal in landfill unit, he added.

Al Najjar said the project also involves construction of a landfill unit over an area of 21,600 square metres and having a depth of five metres. It will have single liner system to retain the lesser hazardous wastes within the unit, he added.

There will be a wheel washing system near the landfill unit for vehicles transporting hazardous waste in order to prevent the spreading of hazardous pollutants on the road during the disposal operation, he said, adding that a monitoring room with all necessary facilities will be set up for daily operation.

The civic body already operates a landfill facility at Ghusais and is currently constructing one in the Warsan area.
