Dubai has enhanced its systems to monitor motorists who use their mobile phones while driving, the emirate's traffic police chief said on Tuesday.

Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic at the Dubai Police, told Arabic daily Emarat Al Youm that police statistics have shown that using mobile phones while driving has become one of the main causes of serious accidents and road deaths.

"Using mobile phones while driving is now one of the principal causes of road accidents, mainly serious accidents.Such accidents have involved many serious injuries and deaths on the road," the newspaper said in a report.

Al Mazrouei said he had visited many of those who were injured in road mishaps at hospital and that most of them admitted they were using their mobile phones just before the accident occurred.

"For this reason we are deploying advanced systems to monitor drivers using mobile phones. We are keen to combat this behavior to ensure the safety of road users," he said.

This traffic violation entails a fine of Dh800 and 4 black points.
