Dh82.3m landscape project is launched

DUBAI — A Dh82.3 million landscaping project for the year was launched by Dubai Municipality yesterday.

The announcement of the various landscaping projects that would be carried out under the '2006 Landscape Project' coincided with the meeting of contractors, consultants and representatives of several municipality departments at the Zabeel Park restaurant yesterday.

The 2006 Landscape Project, which would involve as many as 29 parks, 45 community parks, and 27 other facilities on Dubai's road network (green islands etc), would add another 670 hectares of green area to Dubai's urban landscape. The civic body aims to cover as much as eight per cent of Dubai's urban area in the next four years.

The various facilities that will be built under the project involve the new Dubai Zoo, public parks in Al Qusais and Port Saeed areas, and community parks in Al Barsha, Al Quoz, Al Habbab, and Al Twar areas.

"This meeting comes as part of our mission to establish a high level communication channel with stakeholders. We seek to emphasise on the knowledge transmission process through introducing the Landscape Unit's mission and strategy in serving the community," said Mohammed Hassan Al Ali, Head of Projects Design Section at the General Projects Department of the municipality.

He noted that the Unit's approach in landscape design is based on integration in the distribution of recreational facilities to serve all members of the community. There are certain standards for setting up public parks in line with short and long term requirements and based on budget and planning priorities, he added.

The meeting apart from introducing new landscape projects including parks, playgrounds, and community facilities also covered landscape work in general projects, and discussed facilities offered to contractors by the municipality.
