However, the issue of such plates would only be possible when a given recipient country requires such a procedure.

Brigadier Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Director of Dubai Traffic Police Department, said that the simplification of procedures was a necessary requirement to facilitate the import and export of cars, registering them in the country or re-exporting them. He said large numbers of re-export plates were being issued in a sign of growing business.

He was speaking after a coordination meeting with officials from DUCAMZ, the car free zone authority in Dubai. He said the competitive approach adopted by the various government agencies depends on integration and principles of common interest.

Brigadier Al Zafeen said that instructions were issued by Dubai Police Chief, Lieutenant-General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, to enhance cooperation with DUCAMZ to eliminate all unnecessary measures that delay processing of transactions.

“We have to listen to the viewpoints of car importers and respond to their needs to have re-export plates as they (plates) are necessary for cars to be driven on the country’s roads,” said Brig. Al Zafeen

He warned that any car entering the country without a permit and the payment of customs duty would not be allowed on the country’s roads. He said such cars were allowed to enter the UAE for re-export purposes only and not for registration or use and had no ‘security’ files. He underlined that if there was a need to transport these cars from the port to another location and vice versa, it would only be allowed on specially designed trailers. Some of car traders attended the meeting yesterday. It was decided that the dispensing of re-export plates would be stopped unless in the case when countries to which the cars are exported require such a plate to be fixed on cars.
