DM cleans up drainage holes along Dubai Creek

After collecting a massive 283 tonnes of waste from the Dubai Creek in the first half of this year, the Dubai Municipality has geared up to welcome the rains by cleaning up the rainwater drainage holes overlooking the creek.

The Waste Management Department, which has already cleaned up the gullies in the city and cleared the storm water drains, overflowing of which deface the general view of the creek.

Department Director Abdul Majeed Al Saifaie said this is an yearly procedure done ahead of the winter season, taking into account the time of constant ebb and tide flow and low water level so that technicians and cleaners can control the operations of waste removal and suspended sediment inside the grille of drain holes.

“This work requires closure of all water pumping ports in cooperation and coordination with the Sewerage and Irrigation Network Department,” Saifaie said.

Meantime, Yaqoub Mohammed Al Ali, head of the Specialised Cleaning Section, said the department recently received a new boat which can be used to clean the waste during disasters and accidents outside the Dubai Creek. “This will be used for off-shore cleaning efforts.”

In this regard, barriers and bumpers are placed on the water surface of the creek where the wastes accumulate.

The official said this is aimed at preventing the spread of waste floating on the surface of water. The amount of floating waste from the waters of the Dubai Creek during the first half of 2013 reached up to 283 tonnes. -news@khaleejtimes.com
