Doctors in India's West Bengal were shocked to remove from the stomach of a 26-year-old woman, jewellery and coins worth £53k (Dh240,000 approx), reported Daily Mail.
Runi Khatun was rushed to hospital on July 16 after she began throwing up after every meal. The woman's mother said although she noticed ornaments started disappearing from their home, she had no idea that her daughter was swallowing them.
Doctors removed 69 chains, 80 earrings, 46 coins, eight lockets, 11 nose rings, four keys, five anklets and one watch dial from the woman's abdomen. Most of the retrieved objects were made of copper and brass with some expensive gold jewellery.
According to reports in The Indian Express, the woman is mentally unstable and swallowed over 1.5kg ornaments and coins. "My daughter is mentally unsound. For the past few days she used to throw up everytime after having a meal," the mother was quoted as saying The Indian Express. She added, "Whenever we questioned her about the missing ornaments, she started crying."
Dr. Siddhartha Biswas, head of the surgery department at the Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital, said the woman was 'emancipated' and could not eat food.
"The patient looked weak and emaciated. Her albumin and hemoglobin count were so low that we could not perform an operation soon. Her condition was so critical that she required at least five bottles of blood. We had to administer Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) to artificially inject food through her mouth," Dr. Biswas was quoted as saying in Daily Mail.
The operation lasted for nearly an hour and fifteen minutes and the doctors successfully removed the large chunk of metals and jewellery from her stomach. Dr. Biswas said that her condition is stable now.
