The competition, which is in its second year, is unique owing to its concept, and opens an undiscovered area in the field of student activities. The contest aims to popularise and promote theatre in the young minds of Dubai and link them with the community.
The deserving individuals are provided further training and the opportunity to perform locally along with a reputed overseas theatre groups.
‘Stagestruck’ has the participation of five Universities, including the American College of Dubai, American University of Dubai, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, BITS Pilani, Preston University, Ajman, and two schools. The event will feature a presentation prepared by Special Needs Children, a fashion show by students of American College of Dubai and another fashion show incorporating ‘Panasonic – Ideas for life’ products on the concluding day.
The competition is open to English and Hindi presentations, both with original scripts or adaptations. The award categories include Best Play, Best Actor, Best Stagecraft and Best Original Script.
Earlier, the organisers conducted theatre workshops and a short session on theatre tips from veteran theatre artiste Lillete Dubey last week. Individual workshop by Amit Behl, a famous TV, film and theatre personality, were also conducted as run-up to the upcoming finals for all participating schools and universities. Each participating group got a chance to perform their play in front of Amit, who in turn guided them step-by-step to polish their presentations.
“It was a very rewarding experience. The workshops gave us an in-depth knowledge and greatly helped us to boost our confidence in theatre,” said Nobia Saleem, a participant from the Preston University, Ajman.
