Driver dies in head-on collision with heavy duty truck

RAS AL KHAIMAH / ABU DHABI — A 41-year-old Asian driver died on the spot when his vehicle collided with a heavy truck on the Tawiyin Road in Ras Al Khaimah on Thursday morning.

Col Hassan Al Jeeda, Head of the Traffic Section at the Traffic and Licensing Department in RAK, said the victim was trying to overtake a vehicle when a heavy truck coming from the opposite direction rammed into his vehicle.

He noted that the 38-year-old Arab driver of the truck tried his best to avoid the collision but failed as the victim’s vehicle was too close. After the collision, the truck dragged the victim’s vehicle to a distance of almost 300 metres before it stopped, killing the Asian who was alone in the vehicle.

Ambulances rushed to the scene and the body was removed from the mangled vehicle and taken to Saqr Hospital. The Police detained the truck driver as investigations are going on.

Col Al Jeeda has urged motorists to drive carefully and to abide by the traffic rules and regulations including avoiding overtaking at dangerous spots.

One killed, nine injured

A Sudanese was killed and nine others sustained minor injuries in a gruesome accident involving a bus and a trailer laden with steel bars in Al Gharbiya.

The accident took place on Thursday in the Qareen Al Arish area towards Al Sela in the Western Region.

The primary report revealed that the reason for the accident could be that the bus driver had dozed off.

Elaborating, Major Ahmed Al Shamsi, head of the Al Gharbiya Traffic Section, Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi police, said, “the bus driver who caused the accident might have dozed off while driving and crashed forcibly into the rear side of a trailer truck loaded with steel bars and coursing in the right lane.”

The 50-year-old Sudanese bus passenger succumbed to his injuries, while nine others were slightly injured. Police squads from Al Gharbiya Traffic section, ambulance engines and rescue teams handled the situation professionally.

Capt. Al Shamsi has called upon motorists to rest before driving.

He advised motorists to buckle up and abide by the speed limit, as well.
