Driver who kidnapped, raped women jailed in one case

DUBAI — A driver who has been accused of kidnapping women after posing as a cop and raping them in a deserted villa was sentenced to five-year imprisonment in one such case by the Court of First Instance on Tuesday.

It is the third case of its kind against him. He will be deported as per the court’s order.

According to prosecution records, the Pakistani driver, 29, lured women into his minibus by posing as a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer and raped them.

The Bur Dubai police received complaints from several women that a Pakistani man driving a bus had been harassing them posing as a policeman.

“We learnt that he used to stop the vehicle on seeing women, tell them that he was a cop and asked for their identity cards,” a Somali corporal said during investigation. “He wore a fluorescent jacket that looked like police night-time uniform.”

In this case, the defendant was accused of kidnapping a 27-year-old maid and attempting to rape her at a deserted villa on January 12 in 2008.

He is also accused of impersonating a public officer. She was walking home around 1am. “He tried to start a conversation at first but I ignored him. He then stopped his vehicle and claimed he worked for the residency department,” the maid told the prosecutors.

She described the defendant as wearing a fluorescent jacket and has a card on his neck.

She could not verify his card because she was scared.

He ordered her to get inside his vehicle to take her to the police station as she was not carrying any identification papers.

“He headed towards Al Wasl Road and asked me to kiss him,” she alleged.

He parked the vehicle between two walls blocking her exit from the car. “It was outside a deserted villa in Jumeirah,” she said.

He asked her to kiss him again and touched her leg. As she tried to move away, he grabbed her left hand and lied on top of her asking to have sex with her.

She refused and he slapped her. As she shouted for help, he grabbed her neck and tried to rape her before a camera flash interrupted him.

He moved away from her and sat on his driving seat before a person came and a fight ensued between the two of them. The maid jumped through the back window.

The driver was arrested after several women provided the police with the approximate plate number of the vehicle he was driving.

When the police confronted him with the women’s allegations, he admitted at first that he brought many women to the same villa but he later retracted his statement at the police post. All women victims, including the complainant, recognised the driver at an identification parade of suspects.

A medical report from Rashid Hospital showed that the complainant was attacked and had bruises on her face, neck and shoulder.

At least two similar cases were already registered against him.
