Speaking to Khaleej Times, Obaid Al Mullah, Director General of DTC said that the new initiative is intended to improve the public transport system while providing a reasonable mode of commuting within the city.
Al Mulla pointed out that this initiative had been studied and analysed carefully by DTC as well as the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority and Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director OF the authority.
The City Taxi will run on various routes such as from Shindaga — Jumeirah; Shindaga — Al Quoz-Jebel Ali; Shindaga — Satwa; Shindaga — New Fruits and Vegetable Market in Al Quoz and other areas. The taxis will stop for passengers at lay-bys and bus stops along the route.
“This service was much needed to improve the public transport system in the UAE, especially for people from various segments of society looking for convenient modes of transport,” he said.
“The sharing taxi service will cater to a large segment of the UAE population who do not want to travel by metered taxis or buses taking limited routes but wish to reach their destination on time and in comfort,” he added.
Talking about the salaries of drivers in the backdrop of the recent protests that rocked the organisation, Al Mulla said that the new taxi service had been handed over to a franchised service who have their own methods of paying the drivers. Ignoring the charges of corruption in the department, Al Mulla accepted that since the massive protest, things had been streamlined in the department and all drivers have been issued contracts that clearly state their position in the company.
“Earlier the drivers were working without clarity in their contracts which led to a great confusion,” he explained. Chairman of City Taxi, Nabeel Abdel Karim said, “City Taxi has qualified drivers who have been fully trained by the DTC for excellent customer service, driving, road safety and route knowledge.
