Honesty is not dead. Just a day after reports of a Sharjah cabbie being honoured for returning Dh1.7 million, I was fortunate enough to experience the honesty of another taxi driver first hand.
I had forgotten my belongings -- an ATM card, Nol card and an iPhone kept together in a mobile pouch -- in a taxi while returning home from work. Though I realised my mistake I did not lose my hope.
Yet, I thought for a while: What were the chances of the taxi driver reporting the matter to the police and the police reaching out to me?
I had gone through a similar experience once; in Sharjah. A Pakistani cabbie returned my wallet to his taxi company, who informed my office about the lost items.
Well, I was lucky for a second time! This time it was, Prakash, a 25-year-old Nepali taxi driver. He followed the instructions from the Dubai Police and returned my belongings to the Noor Bank Metro Station, where I had alighted from the taxi.
Whom should I thank first? The Dubai Police officers, who were on duty at the Noor Bank Metro Station, or the young cabbie, who has been working with the Dubai Taxi for four years.
Adil, the policeman on duty, even called me to confirm whether I got my belongings back. These are moments when THANK YOU becomes TOO UNKIND to express one's feelings. BUT THANK YOU.
