The second prize of $50,000 was bagged by Luo Siwei of China with his Magic Mirror concept, which is a twisted ring structure 160 metres in diameter.
Three teams jointly won the third prize: the team led by Alejandro Rios of Spain for its ‘The Mirage’; the duo of Ferran Yusta of France and Marta Pozo of the Netherlands for their ‘Big Beam’; and Candian Hongbo Lu now residing in China for his ‘The Flying Colours of Dubai’. Each team will get $20,000.
The winners will receive the prizes at a ceremony to be held tomorrow under the auspices of Shaikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and Chairman of Dubai Municipality. The Dubai Municipality in partnership with ThyssenKrupp Elevator hosted the ThyssenKrupp Elevator Award conference at the municipality.
It was attended by Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director-General of the Dubai Municipality, and Javier del Pozo, CEO of ThyssenKrupp Elevator. The ThyssenKrupp Elevator Award, which was established in 1988, is an international architecture competition which takes place every year in a chosen city. This year, the Dubai Municipality applied for hosting the event.
“After receiving the proposals, we found Dubai to have one of the best references. After establishing contacts with the Dubai Municipality, we decided to host our competition here,” said del Pozo. As many as 2,967 teams of 4,651 architects from 106 countries sent their entries.
“The models created for this competition are mainly conceptual and not for imminent construction. A second committee will evaluate the models, based on constructability and expenditure, before actual construction is planned,” said Lootah.
