An Azerbaijani man, 30, has been sentenced to three months in jail by the Court of First Instance for threatening to kill his ex-wife and her family.
Prosecution records show that the unemployed man showed up at a late hour at the woman's place in Tecom, Al Barsha, where he harassed and intimidated her to push her into opening the door for him.
In court, the defendant denied the threat charge. He claimed the complainant had dropped the accusations against him. "I went there just to talk about our problems; she is my ex-wife," he earlier claimed before the court bench.
The criminal evidence includes surveillance camera footage showing the accused kicking the woman's flat door several times.
The complainant, a 28-year-old Moldavian employee, said the accused came to her flat on January 24. "It was around 3:30 am. He knocked on the door several times.
"He then slipped a cigarette inside. He kept kicking the door hard for some time".
She claimed the man threatened her by saying: "if you don't open for me I will kill you and your family."
The ex-wife's friend, an Azerbaijani, said that she witnessed the incident.
"I was with the complainant that night. He banged on the door repeatedly and then kicked it with force. He threatened her that he would find her wherever she might be and kill her and kill her family too, if she did not open the door".
The accused reportedly admitted in the investigation that he kicked the door several times after she refused to open for him.
The verdict remains subject to appeal.
