As many as 65 beggars, including 10 women, have been caught since the launch of the anti-begging campaign during this Ramadan in Dubai.
Major General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri said that 16 of the beggars arrested were found to have infiltrated into the country. He said that the beggars are exploiting the holy month of Ramadan and the generosity streak of citizens and residents. He said that the Dubai Police are keen to eradicate begging and arrest those who are engaged in the practice. The Dubai Police are carrying out the campaign in cooperation with the authorities of Dubai Municipality, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai and the Department of Endowments and Charitable Activities in Dubai.
Al Mansouri pointed out that beggars often resort to a variety of excuses, including disease and financial problems, to prod people to offer them alms. He added that rather than giving the money to the 'beggars', they should give it to people who are really in need of it.
The police have been focusing on educating the public about the danger posed by these beggars and the possibility of their involvement in crimes such as theft.
Al-Mansouri said that due to the anti-begging campaign, awareness among the people has increased and they have come forward to inform the police about presence of beggars near mosques, markets and residential zones.
He stressed the need to not sympathize with the beggars, and to help in securing the community by reporting about such activities whenever they encounter it.
