The Dubai Police rescued two brothers who fell into bad company and were influenced by their peers to take drugs.
The two boys, higher secondary school students, were targeted by their schoolmates who started giving the older brother drugs, free of charge at first. Their family did not notice anything as the boy was using drugs secretly, but at one point, he also introduced his younger brother to the drug suppliers and the latter also started abusing drugs. It soon came to their family's attention, who then alerted the Dubai Police's General Department of Anti-Narcotics.
However, the boys will receive immunity from legal action or imprisonment, under the UAE Federal Law 140 of 1995, on the countermeasures taken against narcotics, drugs and psychotropic substances. According to this law, a person will not be subject to punishment if he or she has used drugs for the first time, approached the police voluntarily and asked for rehabilitation. The Dubai Police rescued the brothers and did periodic tests on them for one year. In a happy turn of events, the boys went back to school and got good academic scores.
Know the company your children keep
A social worker at the department's security awareness wing stated the importance of monitoring children's behaviour at all times, and particularly noting any change in them. This is particularly pertinent at at the start of the new academic year, when students start meeting and making new friends.
In another case involving an 18-year-old student, his so-called friends lured him into the drug habit after learning of his family problems, telling him that he could forget about his troubles by consuming drugs.
The boy was aware about the harmful effects of drugs, but his 'friends' were able to exercise the wrong influence over him, leading to his drug use for three months, after which he even started injecting them into his body. This naturally led to his absence from and poor performance in school. He was subsequently apprehended by the Dubai Police is now serving a jail term.
After expressing regret about his drug abuse, the student contacted the security awareness wing, requesting rehabilitation and a wish to complete his studies. He is currently undergoing tests to prove that he is drug-free.
As drug use and addiction is a serious problem that affects a youngster's health and future, the Dubai Police asks those who have a drug problem to seek out help immediately from their family and the police department.
