Al Manara Civil Defence station in Dubai has been renamed as the UAE Martyrs' station in honour of the country's fallen heroes.
Major-General Rashid Thani Al Matroushi, acting Director-General of the UAE Civil Defence, said the day is very dear to Emiratis. The civil defence also honoured the families of the firefighters who died in the line of duty. A firefighter, Lieutenant Haitham Juma Farajh, died on May 2, 2008, while battling a fire that engulfed an under-construction building near a Dubai beach. Another fireman, Kamal Hussein, died during an operation to contain a fire in Palm Jumeirah. Sergeant Mohammed Omer Mahfouz died in an operation to fight a fire in Al Aweer fruits and vegetables market. Sargent Ali Hussien drowned during an operation in Khor Dubai, while Sergeant Yosouf Obaid Rabee died in a training session.
