Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) announced that its glass collection campaign is back after a 10-month gap.
Representatives said benefits of recycling include reducing carbon emissions, saving landfill space and energy, and reducing costs, which have driven EEG to encourage recycling over the past two decades.
Since the launch of its glass recycling campaign in October 2005, EEG has collected 2.25 tonnes of glass bottles from across the UAE and sent them for recycling.
But the campaign had to be suspended in August 2015 as the factory faced contamination issues that resulted from mixing glass and ceramic material.
The EEG has re-launched it with the support of a local recycling factory, Random Global FZCO in Dubai. The campaign offers a platform to all community sectors to recycle their used glass bottles and close a major gap in the local recycling scenario.
As part of the programme, EEG will accept different types of glass from all sectors within the UAE- such as corporate, hotels, academic institutions and families. The bottles will then be channelled to the factory for recycling.
Habiba Al Marashi, chairperson of EEG said the programme is aimed at reducing the environmental impact of glass. She added if undertook efficiently, the program can result in the reduction of glass dumped in the landfill.
According to her, recycling has become an integral part of many cultures and UAE is steadily moving towards it.
Through this initiative EEG urges the public and private organisations in particular the hospitality industry, academic institutions and students to recycle their waste glass bottles; divert glass bottles from landfills; and help conserve resources by encouraging effective recycling programmes.
