DUBAI — The Dubai-based Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) has conducted its second community lecture for this year, focusing on the need to protect the marine environment.
Guest speaker, Dimitris C. Mitsatsos, Director-General of the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (Helmepa), spoke on the topic “Philosophy and Goal of Marine Environment Protection”.
Mitsatsos said oceans are seriously endangered by pollution irrespective of laws and regulations.
“The role of the shipping industry is to protect the seas and coasts from pollution through the help of different stakeholders. This is the reason why marine environmental protection associations should be established,” he said.
Helmepa is an association of Greek seafarers and shipowners who have undertaken the responsibility of enhancing safety at sea and eliminating ship-generated marine pollution.
Habiba Al Marashi, EEG Chairperson, has also emphasised the importance of protecting the marine environment especially in the context of the UAE, which has 1,318 km of coastal areas.
The lecture, held on Thursday, highlighted the impact of human activities on the marine environment causing permanent loss of marine genetic resources and destruction of natural habitats.
