Emiratisation of fishmongering from next year

FUJAIRAH — The General Secretariat of Fujairah Municipality has confirmed the implementation of the Cabinet’s decree, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, to nationalise the trade of selling fish starting from next year.

This decision had been on the anvil for quite some time, and it is bound to find a mixed response depending on whether the person engaged in the fish trade was a national or an expat.

Nationals engaged in the trade have been campaigning for a larger say and share in the trade, complaining that expats with their numbers had an undue hold on the trade, an imbalance, which should be set right.

The finer points of the decree would throw light on this and other aspects of the trade, provide answers to several questions like what would have happen to the expat fish-seller post-nationalisation, and whether they would have to leave the country.

The Cabinet had held a meeting at Fujairah Municipality in which various topics were discussed and the reports on health, environment and food safety were reviewed.

The most important issue was the protection of the consumer from adulterated food. Recommendations submitted by the National Committee for Food Safety regarding the expiry date of tea were reviewed.
