Residents might come back from summer vacations with high electricity and water bills despite being absent.
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) launched its annual Tips Before Travelling campaign to help residents save their energy use when away for summer.
On its fourth year, the campaign aims to conserve electricity and water, protect natural resources and reduce costs.
Tips include turning off lights, unplugging unnecessary electrical appliances such as water heaters, and air conditioning, which hugely contribute to energy use.
To reduce water use, DEWA asks residents to ensure there are no leaks in their homes.
Checking all taps and internal wiring in their bathrooms and kitchens and turning off taps before leaving the house is necessary to avoid overpriced bills.
Leaks can waste over 32,000 gallons of water per year.
This campaign supports the Demand Side Management Strategy 2030 to reduce electricity demand by 30 per cent by 2030.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA said the strategy features nine major aspects including regulations for green construction, retrofitting existing buildings, district cooling, reusing waste water, laws and strategies to enhance the efficiency of appliances and street lighting, and strategies to enhance the efficiency of DEWA's Shams Dubai initiative.
"DEWA works to achieve the happiness of all the citizens and residents of Dubai, whether they choose to stay in Dubai over the summer months or not, and strives to conserve water and electricity through initiatives that promote the rationalisation of consumption," added Al Tayer.
Tips Before Travelling campaign is part of the 'Let's Make this Summer Green' initiative to coincide with World Environment Day, to rationalise electricity and water use over the summer.
