SHARJAH - Enviro-Spellathon 2002-2003, the UAE's largest environmental education programme targeting primary schools in four emirates, was launched in Sharjah at a ceremony held at AI Qasba yesterday.
The Emirates Wildlife Society (EWS) and Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), in co-operation with the Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency (ERWDA) and the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), Sharjah are executing the project.
More than 125,000 primary school children (6-12 years old) in Sharjah, Ras AI Khaimah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi will participate in the Enviro-Spellathon.
Joining Sharjah's EPAA in implementing the programme are Dubai Municipality for Dubai, the Environmental Protection and Industrial Development Commission (EPIDC) for Ras Al Khaimah, and ERWDA for Abu Dhabi.
Initiated in Abu Dhabi last year, the Enviro-Spellathon drew participation from as many as 45,000 students from 172 schools in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region. In the current year, the campaign has not only enlarged its geographical coverage to include other emirates, but has also increased its scope by targeting more age groups and developing additional study materials.
Every participating student studies the booklet relevant to the appropriate age-group over a period of two weeks, after which the coordinator teacher conducts a test on what has been learnt.
Certificates or gifts are then awarded to participants depending on their scores, with the best being nominated 'Enviro-Spellathon Ambassadors'.
Hussain AI Mahmoudi, External Affairs Manager for Shell Dubai and the Northern Emirates, Salem Al Tunaiji, Director of Sharjah Education Zone, and Professor Ahmed K. Bashir, Director of ERWDA also attended and addressed the launch ceremony.
