SHARJAH - The Environment Education and Awareness Committee in Sharjah launched its annual programme for spreading environment awareness among the general public, school and college students and government departments.
The announcement was made at a Press conference on Tuesday in the presence of Saleh Al Habashi from the Federal Environment Authority (FEA), Abul Aziz Al Midfa, Director General of the Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority, representatives of government departments, and the committee members.
Mr Al Habashi said that education is essential for the environment as it triggers individuals to put more effort in protecting the environment from pollution.
"The FEA developed the institutions and establishments involved in the field of environment protection. In 1994, the authority chalked out a comprehensive plan in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). We are working on developing it through a committee including representatives of government departments," he pointed out.
Environment education should be subjected to a sustainable development, cover a large scale of public and enhance skills of cadres working in the environment protection field, Mr Al Habashi said.
"Creating better awareness on environment issues entitles developing the environment subjects and courses of the academic syllabus.
"Environment experts should also set the educational curricula and conduct training courses for the academic staff," he added.
