Speaking at the 113th anniversary celebration of the Philippine Independence Day, the Consul-General said that Filipinos should all recall the patriotism and courage of their forefathers, who fought for and won independence in 1898. In spite of the different cultures, dialects and religions, the national heroes were able to raise the flag of nationalism so that they could all be united as one country today.

“The path to freedom was filled with tremendous sacrifices by our heroes and countrymen way back then. It is only appropriate that we now remember their deeds and give honour to their perseverance, integrity and conviction. These values are very important especially during these times when we are working hard to face challenges from economic conditions that confront us all,” he said.

He congratulated the organisers, sponsors and participants of the Job Fair, Community Service Expo and other events held as part of the Independence Day celebrations. “The active participation of Filipino organisations across the six emirates in the various activities and events also demonstrate that the Filipino spirit of “Bayanihan” (unity) is very much alive among the Filipino diaspora. Your constant support will always be well appreciated not only by our kababayans here but also by our families in the Philippines. I wish you all the best and Happy iz” of June!”

The Independence Day celebration was held at Al Shabab Sports Club at the backside of Century Mall in Deira, from 8am to 8pm. A free whole day affair from 8am to 8pm, the celebration was anchored on the delivery of ‘Community Services’, universal prayer by different religions, including Islam and fellowship service from more than 20 born-again Christian Churches.

Analiza Concepcion, chairperson of the Filipino Community (FILCOM) and director of Fillipino Off-Road Auto Club, said that Safety Awareness Booklets were distributed to the participants free of charge that give emphasis to UAE Immigration and labour laws. — lily@khaleejtimes.com
