ABU DHABI — The Philippine Embassy will hold a month-long celebration in the capital to mark the 111th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence.
The Philippine Independence Day is being held in commemoration of the country’s declaration of independence from Spain on June 12, 1989 in Kawit, Cavite.
The celebration will begin with a ‘Flag Day’ on May 28 at the Philippine embassy, where a seminar about the nation’s flag will be held for students from Filipino schools.
Other activities include a ‘Walk for a Cause’ on June 5 at the corniche, free informative seminars on June 5 and 19, a flag-raising ceremony at the Philippine Embassy on June 12 followed by a Thanksgiving service at St Joseph Church, Filipino cultural presentation on June 26 and a diplomatic reception hosted by the Philippine Embassy on June 28.
“We urge our Filipino compatriots to join us in the celebration of our independence. This is a very important occasion in the Philippine history. Regardless of where we are, we should always remember what our forefathers did to liberate us from foreign rule and grant us our freedom,” said Jethroefel Ramboyong, Chairman of the 2009 Philippine Independence Day Organising Committee. olivia@khaleejtimes.ae
