Islamabad: The first-ever local government (LG) elections in the federal capital will be held today.
Electioneering for the polls ended on Saturday night at 12am. Candidates made their last-ditch efforts by carrying out door-to-door canvassing to convince the voters in their favour.
The capital territory has been divided into 50 Union Councils (UCs) and 640 polling stations have been set up at 326 buildings, of which 62 buildings have been declared most sensitive. The most sensitive polling stations will be guarded by Army and Rangers personnel deployed there.
At least 7,752 policemen including 3,720 personnel of Islamabad police will perform their duties on the polling day.
As many as 2,400 candidates are vying for the seats of chairman, vice chairman and councilors.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Tahir Alam Khan directed all police officials to ensure elaborate security arrangements in the federal capital on eve of polling day.
The IGP reviewed the law and order situation and meeting finalised an effective strategy regarding security for the elections in Islamabad. The police chief directed all officials to conduct complete checking of buildings before start of polling and maintain close liaison with Returning Officers for peaceful holding of elections.
