Five in jail for bid to encash firm's cheques

DUBAI — The Dubai Misdemeanor Court has sentenced a Syrian and four Indians to six month's imprisonment followed by deportation on charges of trying to encash two cheques belonging to a legal firm for Dh312,834.

The five accused are Issam N., a 24-year-old Syrian, Abdul Qasim N., Yousuf B., Mohammed Meel B. and Asif M., all Indians.

According to the court's statement, the four indians helped Issam, who works as an accounts clerk for a construction company, to use the legal firm's cheques to withdraw the amount drawn on a UAE bank.

Waleed A, a legal researcher with the firm, informed the police about the incident after Issam came to the office with the two cheques stating that it was given to him by an Indian. Police subsequently arrested the Indian who confessed that all the accused were part of the plan to have the cheques encashed. The money was to be divided among the gang members once they were encashed.

DUBAI — The Dubai Misdemeanour Court has sentenced a 36-year-old Iranian national, Mohammed R., to two months in prison to be followed by deportation for possesing 528 bottles of alchohol and 48 cans of beers.

A police patrol on Al Ain Road had stopped a car after they noticed that it was was being driven in a strange way and had then stopped suddenly come to a halt. The patrol car approached the vehicle and asked the driver who, it was later revealed was unemployed and staying illegally in the UAE, what he was carrying in the vehicle. The driver confessed that he was carrying alcohol.
