FNC House takes shape

ABU DHABI — The President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, issued a federal decree yesterday naming the members of the Federal National Council (FNC) for its 14th legislative session, Wam reported yesterday.

It included the names of 20 nominated members of the 40-member House, half of whom were elected in the country’s first democratic elections in December last year.

The President, as promised in his 2005 vision statement while addressing the nation, has kept his commitment to empower women in the UAE by nominating as many as eight women as FNC members in the distinguished list of 20 nominees.

With one other woman already a member of the august House — Dr Amal Al Qubaisi who was elected from Abu Dhabi — women members now constitute 22.2 per cent of the FNC. Interestingly, this prominence and weightage given to women in the newly-constituted FNC compares quite favourably even with European democracies in terms of percentage of parliamentary representation: Italy 11.6, France 12, Britain 20, Germany 31.6.

Members’ list

Article one of the decree (No. 6 for 2007) said FNC’s 14^th legislative chapter shall be composed of the following members:

Abu Dhabi: 1. Ahmed Shabib Mohammed Hilal Al Dhaheri; 2. Amal Abdullah Gumaa Karam Al Qubiaisi; 3. Rashid Mosbeh Al Kindi Ali Al Marar; 4. Amer Abdul Jaleel Mohammed Abdul Raheem Al Faheem; 5. Abdullah Nasser Huwayleel Al Mansouri; 6. Fatima Hamad Nasser Hamad Al Kinaibi Al Mazrouei; 7. Mohammed Mohammed Ali Fadel Al Hamli; 8. Mogheer Khamis Mogheer Jabir Al Khaili.
