A funky outdoor setting made more lively with upbeat music and artsy industrial décor. Throw in delectable dishes and add into the equation the cool weather - what will you get? A perfect recipe for a street food party.
Street Food Market DXB, a new urban street food market for adults only (yes, you read it right: children are not allowed, sorry), turned a patch of parking lot at the Dubai International Marine Club, next to Barasti, into a food haven on Thursday night.
Street eats were served by around 20 pop-up concepts and food trucks, featuring mouth-watering dishes made by some of the city's innovative chefs and street food vendors.
Visitors dined under the stars and were treated to various options. The cuisines varied from a 200-year old vanilla custard tart recipe from a Portuguese monastery to a Punjabi's grandma's kitchen; to a Middle Eastern-inspired fusion of a Nepalese and Japanese cuisine and to popular sandwiches on the streets of Beirut.
While tucking into their favourite food, some visitors also danced to groovy beats belted out by the local DJs. A note, though: When we arrived, a re-mastered version of Ray Charles' 'Hit the Road Jack' was playing. But we didn't 'hit the road', we were instantly pulled by the ambience at the Street Food Market. Old-school cassette tapes, analogue radios, road signs, and petrol drums converted into tables and chairs all added to the laid-back and welcoming outdoor setting. Street Food Market DXB is the latest creation of cultural entrepreneur Alexandre Teodoresco, the creator of ground-breaking concepts in town such as TruckersDXB and Street Nights. Once more, he came up with an innovative and authentic experience for us to enjoy.
"This concept is tailored for Dubai's food-savvy communities, offering a 'free spirited' outdoor event for adults only, where talented food pop-up and food truck vendors are encouraged to surprise and amaze our guests with delicious creations," he said.
Aside from Street Food Market DXB, there is Street Food LAB, where some of the best amateur cooks compete to showcase their skills and hidden recipes. Six winners will be coached by local chefs to prepare their recipes - from ingredient selection to pricing, and each of them will be able to bring their creations to hundreds of visitors.
There are four nights left to catch Street Food Market DXB - on January 21; 26-28 . But according Teodoresco, "Street Food Market DXB will be traveling to various locations - in unexpected places around town to become the latest addition to 'must-do' experiences in Dubai."
