Former Hotel Staff Admits to Stealing from Guest’s Room

DUBAI - A Sri Lankan worker pleaded guilty to stealing money and other items from the hotel where he used to work in the Criminal Court of First Instance on Monday.

According to the court records, the 26-year-old defendant stole hotel’s eight electronic room cards, 200 euros and $100 on August 19 this year from the hotel in Rifaa area. The stolen money belonged to an Algerian guest.

The Algerian complained to the hotel management that 200 euros and $100 were stolen from his wallet while he was in the bathroom of his room. The CCTV footage showed the Sri Lankan walking through the corridors towards the guest’s room around the same time the incident reportedly happened.

The public relations manager at the hotel told interrogators that the accused admitted to him that he had committed the theft.

“He said he stole the money when he went to the Algerian’s room for delivering a newspaper. The guest was in the bathroom at the time,” the public relations manager said.

According to him, the Sri Lankan got rid of the stolen money by flushing it in the toilet as soon as he came to know that the Algerian had informed the police. During a search in the accused’s closet, the police found four cheques, eight electronic room cards, which he admitted to stealing earlier.
