Fujairah schools: wooden fire traps

FUJAIRAH — Wooden buildings housing most of the schools in Fujairah are virtual fire traps and provide insufficient shelter to students and teachers from rains.

But this dangerous state of affairs is all set to change following the tour of schools in the emirate by His Highness Shaikh Muhammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai recently.

The number of the wooden classrooms estimated at 110 in Fujairah is a record of sorts in the UAE educational sector.

Making a quick trip along the eastern coast of UAE, Khaleej Times found that most of the schools located there have inflammable wooden classrooms with just a few of them built with cement.

The number of 'wooden' schools in Al Badiya are 14, Zeid bin Al Khatab 12, Al Noman bin Makran 12, Rumaithaa Al Ansariah in Masafi 10, Zubaidah bint Jafar 10, Almarefa located in Dhadna 9, Lubna bint Habab located in Dhaba 9, Al Muthana bint Haretha located in Marbah 8 and Fatema bint Otba 8. There are other schools, which contain one to four wooden classrooms.
