German railway officials briefed on Dubai Metro

DUBAI — Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has discussed the means of cooperation between RTA and its German counterpart during the International Trade fair For Technology and Conference (Inno Trans 2006) that ended on Friday.

Al Tayer met Volkma Shkok, Deputy Mayor of Berlin, and discussed the scope for cooperation regarding public transport and railways.

The delegation also held a meeting with Hartmut Mehdorn, President of the Rail Agency in Germany, and reviewed the Dubai Metro project being executed by the RTA at a total cost of Dh15 billion.

The project will be completed in September 2009.

Al Tayer said that Dubai Metro was based on a state-of-the-art technology and there would be air-conditioning systems in stations and trains.

He further said that all trains would operate in accordance with the integrated electronic system so as to control flight schedules.

The railway stations have also been designed and equipped with the latest technology regarding safety and security with special yards for private and public vehicles and buses, he added.

Al Tayer said that the Dubai Metro would work automatically, ie without drivers.

According to the system, the train will run every 90 seconds and ensure protected doors.

Special carriages have been allocated for women and first-class passengers.

He added that the total length of the green and red lines would be 70 km while there would be 41 stations.

The Red Line would be nearly 52 km long with 28 stations while the length of the Green Line would be 18 km with 13 stations.

There would be 69 trains.

Al Tayer called on all German companies specialised in railway industry to participate in tenders for the maintenance of the Dubai Metro and other related projects.
