Green Hospitals Set a New Trend

DUBAI - With 12 healing gardens and sustainable solar energy panels, the Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital has been built as a square to reduce footprint, said the Italian architects of the one of the two green upcoming hospitals in the emirate.

The other upcoming green hospital is the Shaikh Maktoum Hospital and Trauma Centre located in Jebel Ali which is also scheduled to be completed in 2012.

Presenting the project to Princess Haya bint Al Hussein, wife of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai during the recently concluded Arab Health Exhibition and Congress, the architects said the construction prevents entry of between 30-40 per cent of harmful radiation.

“The façade has been developed to block noise and give maximum patient comfort,” said architect Giulio Altieri, Co-designer and Energy Analyst, Studio Altieri International.

He said hospital had been designed to give children access to green through the extensive healing gardens built for educational and therapeutic purposes. The hospital has also been designed to reuse nine million gallons of water for different purposes.
