Gujaratis throng Varanasi

With the Lok Sabha elections over in Gujarat on April 30, hundreds of supporters and opponents of political parties have been flocking to Varanasi for campaigning ahead of the May 12 high-profile ballot-box battle involving Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and Aam Aadmi Party supremo Arvind Kejriwal.

On Friday, even Maulana Mehdi Hasan Baba, whose request to wear a skull cap was rejected by Modi in 2011, left for the holy city with a few friends and well-wishers to campaign against the controversial politician. The cleric, who hails from Kheda town near Ahmedabad, has been holding spiritual programmes throughout the country, including Varanasi, for the past 25 years but this time, he told Khaleej Times, he had a mission.

“We will be asking the people of Varanasi to vote against Modi and save the country from bad politicians”, he said before leaving, and added that he was bent on cleansing dirt from politics.

Interestingly, for the past two months, he had been appealing to Gujarat youths to offer their services voluntarily. The maulana said he did not want money but sought only volunteers to work with him in the campaign against Modi in Varanasi.
