The hi-tech hospital, opened by Shaikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone Authority, is the first multidisciplinary hospital in DHC.

“Trust factor is critical in the healthcare system. The Centre for Healthcare Planning and Quality (CPQ) (that regulates clinical standards at DHC) has high standards and this will be instrumental in raising the bar in healthcare system,” said Dr Ayesha Abdullah, senior vice-president of DHC, at a Press conference after the inauguration. She added that the hospital’s establishment marked a major milestone for DHC and the emirate.

Sunny Varkey, chairman of Emirates Healthcare Holding, which owns City Hospital, Welcare Hospital and Welcare Clinic, said the group has an excellent treatment record and would continue providing the same quality. Equipped with sophisticated diagnostic facilities and specialised treatment in a wide range of medical disciplines, the technologically advanced, 210-bed hospital promises to bring in medical practices prevalent in Western countries.

“It marks another step forward for us as a healthcare provider to offer care of the highest standard and we hope that it demonstrates our commitment to contribute to the vision of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to position Dubai as a world leader in healthcare,” added Varkey, also an entrepreneur and chairman of the Gems group of schools.

The hospital while hoping to boost medical tourism in the emirate will also try and retain expatriates who go back to their home countries for treatment. “We think we have priced our facilities appropriately to suit the Dubai market,” said David Hadley, hospital director of The City Hospital.

The CPQ regulations mandate that hospitals in the healthcare city meet the accreditation standards laid down by the Joint Commission International (JCI) that provides international accreditation.

The hospital will provide patients with expert care in a variety of specialist areas that include cardiology and cardiac surgery, dentistry, dermatology, ENT, family medicine, general practice, internal medicine, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, endocrinology, vascular surgery, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, paediatrics and neonatology, pulmonology, plastic surgery, nephrology, anaesthesia, gastroenterology, breast surgery, radiology, urology, intensive care unit and emergency department.

Shaikh Maktoum also toured the hospital and its facilities. Humaid Mohammed Obaid Al Qutami, Minister of Health, Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Dr Hanif Hassan, Minister of Education, were also present.
