Hindi play to be staged tomorrow

DUBAI - Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi, a Hindi play adapted from a popular Gujarati play running to full houses since its launch in 2000, will be staged tomorrow by Rangmanch Theatre Events at the Emirates Auditorium of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dubai.

Written and directed by Feroze Bhagat, who also plays a lead character in the play, Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi is a light-hearted entertainer and revolves around the importance of family ties.

Describing the play as being 'close to reality' Apara Mehta, a veteran of the Gujarati theatre and an upcoming television artist, who plays opposite Mr Bhagat, said that every individual and family in the audience would be able to relate to the play.
Speaking to the Press, Mr Bhagat noted that despite the seriousness of the message the play carries, the light treatment makes it utterly humourous and entertaining.

He said that the Hindi version has been so successful that Bollywood director David Dhawan is planing a movie on the same storyline, while former Indian superstar Rajesh Khanna wanted to play the lead role (originally played by Mr Bhagat himself).

On a question about the popularity of comedy and light theatre, Amin Rajwani, Rangmanch partner, said that comedy is the best medium to convey a social message, and added that today's stressful lifestyles demand a bit of humour in life to make it bearable.
Explaining the reasons behind the two shows on Friday, one from 6pm onwards followed by another at 9pm, he said that it was an attempt to set a trend that allows people to enjoy theatre on weekends while still having the evening for their other family commitments.

A total of 28 shows of the play, in both Hindi and Gujarati, will be staged in the US in April this year, and tickets for the nine Hindi shows have already been sold out, said Mr Bhagat. He added that the play is a wholesome entertainment, a must see for all those who enjoy meaningful and decent theatre.
