She stole a large amount of cash and jewellery, according to an official from the investigation section of Sharjah Police.

The maid, Kharina Molina, had earlier claimed that a group of men entered the house, assaulted her physically and sexually, and stole the money.

But, the police said that the maid had exploited the absence of the family members and stole the valuables kept in a safe belonging to her employer's wife.

When the head of the household returned with his family to the house, they found the safe broken open and the contents of the room scattered on the floor.

The whole house was in a mess. When the employer asked the maid what had happened in their absence, she informed them that some men had broken into the house and tried to rape her and fled with jewellery and cash. The employer immediately lodged a complaint to this effect with the police.

The investigation officers while interrogating the maid suspected that the story narrated by the maid was not true, as she was very hesitant to talk and often changed her statements.

Besides, when the maid was taken for a medical check, reports disclosed no signs of a physical or sexual assault attempts made on her. When the police continued the interrogation, she collapsed and confessed that she had committed the theft and had buried the stolen items in the backyard of the house without any help from anybody.

She showed the police the place where she had buried the stolen items following which the police managed to retrieve the stolen cash and jewellery in full. The maid was immediately arrested and after the termination of her employment, the case was referred to the public prosecution.

Speaking to Khaleej Times on condition of anonymity, the maid's employer said that he had hired her through a labour supply agency located in Sharjah. She had spent a year and half serving the family. During her service, there were not a single moment or behaviour which could have raised suspicions about her intentions, the employer said. ''As a result, we trusted her and allowed her to stay in the house in our absence,'' he added.
